Talk Like a Winner: 21 Simple Rules for Achieving Everyday Communication Success (Paperback)

Talk Like a Winner: 21 Simple Rules for Achieving Everyday Communication Success
Talk Like a Winner: 21 Simple Rules for Achieving Everyday Communication Success (Paperback)
By Steve Nakamoto

Product Images

Review & Description

Basically, I d like to find more ways where we can party with the chicks in the girls dorms, the author once said in a speech before a college election. That s really what we all want, isn t it? Uhh...I guess that s about it.

This is not the stellar speech one would expect from the author of a book called Talk Like a Winner. Steve Nakamoto shares his embarrassing communication failures and explains what he has learned and how he could have handled past situations differently.

Talk Like a Winner covers Nakamoto s twenty-one rules for successful communication by devoting a chapter to each rule. Each chapter gives a definition for the rule, personal anecdotes from the author s experiences, and exercises for improving proficiency in that particular area.

Some of the topics covered may seem like common sense, such as assessing a situation to determine the tone of conversation, and becoming a better listener so that everyone has a chance to speak. However, Nakamoto manages to provide tips and ideas that readers probably wouldn t otherwise think of trying.

The author has gained his current communication prowess not only by learning from painful mistakes, but also by stepping out of his comfort zone and approaching new situations with an open mind. He has received two Writer s Digest International Book Awards for his other books, Dating Rocks! and Men Are Like Fish. He was also a human relations and communications instructor for Dale Carnegie and Associates and served as a neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) personal development trainer for Tony Robbins for seven years.

"...It might be wise to admit what you don t know as well as what you do know about any given subject," Nakamoto says about choosing what to share in a conversation. We've all known someone who seems to know something about everything, no matter how obscure the topic. It can be annoying to converse with these types of people, but we might not recognize when we do it ourselves. This section of the book gives good tips for breaking annoying conversation-killing habits like these. Ending a conversation can be just as difficult as starting one. If you don t think about how to close a conversation you can inadvertently leave a bad impression. Nakamoto shares an experience he had with a professional volleyball player: ...I thanked the pro for his time and input. But what I remember most from our interaction was that he didn t reply to me by saying... You re welcome ... instead he simply turned and walked away from me. The book offers lots of useful tips, exercises, and techniques for those just beginning to explore communication techniques, rather than more experienced communicators. Some of the advice and tips are a little cliché, but the overall quality of the book is good. Talk Like a Winner is recommended to those interested in working on relationships and communication dynamics. Read more

Praise for Dr. Akil's Teaching:

His approach to teaching communications was the best I have ever experienced. He made the learning environment very comfortable and relaxed, which really helped in learning a stressful subject like speech communications.

Dr. Akil's way of teaching public speaking made me feel more comfortable speaking in front of others. The concepts and things learned in class taught me that there was a whole lot more to presenting an effective speech.

You rock!

Dr. Akil is a great teacher. I was worried I would not make it through this class because I have anxiety and do not like speaking in front of people. He made it easier for me to speak in front of others. For that I am grateful!

Awesome professor!! One of my best classes!!

Why should you use "Write a Speech in One Hour?"

This book is different from other books because it was written by a bona-fide speech professor who has been in the trenches and trained thousands. The method in this book will give you the results you seek.

Review & Description

For more than 150 years, historians have speculated about what made Abraham Lincoln great. How did Lincoln create his iron logic, his compelling reason, his convincing oratory, and his memorable writing? Some point to Lincoln's study of grammar, literature, and poetry. Others believe it was the deep national crisis that elevated Lincoln's oratory. Most agree though that he honed his persuasive technique in his work as an Illinois attorney.

Authors Hirsch and Van Haften persuasively argue, for the first time, that it was Lincoln's in-depth study of geometry that gave our sixteenth president his verbal structure. Although Lincoln's fascination with geometry is well documented, most historians have concluded that his study of the subject was little more than mental calisthenics. In fact, conclude the authors, Lincoln embedded the ancient structure of geometric proof into the Gettysburg Address, the Cooper Union speech, the First and Second Inaugurals, his legal practice, and much of his substantive post-1853 communication.

Modern science can be traced back to Greek geometric method, but rhetoric, which morphed into speech and then into communications, has barely advanced since Aristotle. Lincoln's structure emancipates speech from Aristotle and unleashes limitless possibilities. Indeed, his use of geometric method in rhetoric and writing has long been a secret hiding in plain sight. Virtually any literate person can become an Abraham Lincoln by structuring speech with iron logic, as aptly demonstrated by this remarkable new study.

Among other things, the authors artfully demonstrate the real importance of the Cooper Union speech (which helped make Lincoln president), offer a startling revelation about the Declaration of Independence that connects Lincoln to Thomas Jefferson more closely than anyone previously realized, and show how the structure of the legal system played an even more important role in Lincoln's greatness than heretofore realized.

With the publication of Abraham Lincoln and the Structure of Reason, Lincoln immediately takes on a new importance that will open an entirely new avenue of scholarly study.

About the Authors: David Hirsch is an attorney in Des Moines, Iowa. He has a BS from Michigan State University and a JD, with distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law. He clerked for an Iowa Supreme Court Justice from 1973-1974. Hirsch co-authored the technology column for the American Bar Association Journal for over a decade. The idea for this book came from a column he co-authored for the ABA Journal in 2007.

Dan Van Haften lives in Batavia, Illinois. He has BS, with high honor, and MS degrees in mathematics from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. He began his career with ATandT Bell Laboratories in 1970, and retired from Alcatel-Lucent in 2007. His work involved software development and system testing on telecommunication systems. Read more

Review & Description

Product Description

Presentations are meant to inform, inspire, and persuade audiences. So why then do so many audiences leave feeling like they've wasted their time? All too often, presentations don't resonate with the audience and move them to transformative action.

Just as the author's first book helped presenters become visual communicators, Resonate helps you make a strong connection with your audience and lead them to purposeful action. The author's approach is simple: building a presentation today is a bit like writing a documentary. Using this approach, you'll convey your content with passion, persuasion, and impact.

  • Author has a proven track record, including having created the slides in Al Gore's Oscar-winning An Inconvenient Truth
  • Focuses on content development methodologies that are not only fundamental but will move people to action
  • Upends the usual paradigm by making the audience the hero and the presenter the mentor
  • Shows how to use story techniques of conflict and resolution

Presentations don't have to be boring ordeals. You can make them fun, exciting, and full of meaning. Leave your audiences energized and ready to take action with Resonate.

Create a S.T.A.R. Moment
Presentation Tips from Resonate

Create a moment where you dramatically drive the big idea home by intentionally placing Something They’ll Always Remember—a S.T.A.R. moment—in each presentation. This moment should be so profound or so dramatic that it becomes what the audience chats about at the water cooler or appears as the headline of a news article. Planting a S.T.A.R. moment in a presentation keeps the conversation going even after it’s over and helps the message go viral.

Since you might be presenting to an audience that sees lots of presentations—like a venture capitalist or a customer who is reviewing several vendors—you want to stand out two weeks after you presented, when they’re making their final decision. You want them to remember YOU instead of all the other presenters they encountered.

The S.T.A.R. moment should be a significant, sincere, and enlightening moment during the presentation that helps magnify your big idea—not distract from it.

There are five types of S.T.A.R. moments:

Memorable Dramatization: Small dramatizations convey insights. They can be as simple as a prop or demo, or something more dramatic, like a reenactment or skit.

Repeatable Sound Bites: Small, repeatable sound bites help feed the press with headlines, populate and energize social media channels with insights, and give employees a rally cry.

Evocative Visuals: A picture really is worth a thousand words—and a thousand emotions. A compelling image can become an unforgettable emotional link to your information.

Emotive Storytelling: Stories package information in a way that people remember. Attaching a great story to the big idea makes it easily repeatable beyond the presentation.

Shocking Statistics: If statistics are shocking, don’t gloss over them; draw attention to them.

The S.T.A.R. moment shouldn’t be kitschy or cliché. Make sure it’s worthwhile and appropriate, or it could end up coming off like a really bad summer camp skit. Know your audience and determine what will resonate best with them. Don’t create something that’s overly emotionally charged for an audience of biochemists.

S.T.A.R. moments create a hook in the audience’s minds and hearts. They tend to be visual in nature and give the audience insights that supplement solely auditory information.

Famous S.T.A.R. Moments

Richard Feynman
Richard Feynman helped investigate the space shuttle Challenger disaster. He quickly identified the failure of a crucial O-ring as the probable cause of the explosion. To illustrate his point, he bent and clamped a piece of the rubber O-ring and secretly placed it in a cup of ice water. At a perfectly timed moment, he loosened the clamp and as the rubber slowly uncurled he said, “…[F]or more than a few seconds, there is no resilience in this particular material when it is at a temperature of 32 degrees.” The press went nuts because it should have expanded in a millisecond.

Bill Gates
Through his philanthropy, Bill Gates hopes to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, including malaria. In his 2009 TED talk, Gates established the gravity of this disease by stating that millions have died, and 200 million people are suffering from it at any given time. He then stated that more money is spent developing baldness drugs on behalf of wealthy men than on fighting malaria for the poor. At that moment, he released a jar of mosquitoes into the room saying, “There’s no reason only poor people should have the experience.”

Steve Jobs
Steve Jobs is a master at unveiling Apple products in intriguing ways. “This is the MacBook Air,” he said in January 2008, “so thin it even fits inside one of those envelopes you see floating around the office.” With that, Jobs walked to the side of the stage, picked up one such envelope, and pulled out a MacBook Air. The audience went wild as the sound of hundreds of cameras clicking and flashing filled the auditorium. “You can get a feel for how thin it is. It has a full-size keyboard and full-size display. Isn’t it amazing? It’s the world’s thinnest notebook,” said Jobs.

Case Study: Michael Pollan
Memorable Dramatization

Michael Pollan is a natural storyteller who teaches people where food comes from. His books, The Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food, have reshaped how Americans think about the current food system.

When Pollan spoke at Pop!Tech in the fall of 2009, there was one point in particular where he wanted to leave a deep impression on the audience. He and his team had calculated how much crude oil it takes to create a fast food double cheeseburger. It was a staggering amount, and he wanted that message to stick.

When he was introduced at the beginning of his presentation, Pollan walked on stage carrying a paper bag from a fast food chain. “A little something for later,” he said. He placed it on a table in the middle of the stage and started his presentation—thereby leaving the audience in suspense about the prop on the table.

Later, when Pollan was drawing connections between oil and the food supply, he said, “I want to show you how much oil goes into producing this [cheeseburger].” He pulled out the burger from the paper bag. Then he pulled out an empty eight-ounce glass and a container full of oil. He filled the glass with oil. “But that’s not all. You need another eight ounces.” He reached under the table and pulled out a second glass. Then he did it again. And again. In all, it took twenty-six ounces of oil to produce one double cheeseburger.

Showing the audience the burger next to the crude oil used to produce it was a disturbing visual—one that the audience would almost certainly remember the next time they made food choices.

Speech Boot Camp: Missions and Drills to Improve your Public Speaking Fast (Kindle Edition)

Speech Boot Camp: Missions and Drills to Improve your Public Speaking Fast
Speech Boot Camp: Missions and Drills to Improve your Public Speaking Fast (Kindle Edition)
By Bakari Akil II PhD

Review & Description

As a professor, I have had the pleasure of working with thousands of adults and have helped them to substantially increase their public speaking abilities. One of the reasons I have been able to do that is because I have applied the best lesson I learned in the military in training people to become more effective speakers.

I run my speech classes like a boot camp and we practice, practice and practice some more.

But my version of boot camp is slightly different from the Army’s. Yes, my concept is based on placing the students in public speaking situations they have never been in. Plus, I increase the level of difficulty as they progress and ask them to speak on a daily basis. Yet, it is based on making sure that class is fun, entertaining and enjoyable.

That is what this book is about. I will be asking you to challenge yourself. I will prod you to step out of your comfort zones. But if you follow the advice, in the form of missions, you will also see how public speaking can be exciting, invigorating and downright fun.

I will also discuss a lot of ideas that you can use to immediately reduce anxiety in the form of mental outlooks. And for those who need immediate advice, this book also contains tips and tricks to help you immediately take control of your public speaking experience and not let it control you.

Review & Description

No matter where you are on the organizational ladder, the odds are high that you've delivered a high-stakes presentation to your peers, your boss, your customers, or the general public. Presentation software is one of the few tools that requires professionals to think visually on an almost daily basis. But unlike verbal skills, effective visual expression is not easy, natural, or actively taught in schools or business training programs. slide:ology fills that void.

Written by Nancy Duarte, President and CEO of Duarte Design, the firm that created the presentation for Al Gore's Oscar-winning film, An Inconvenient Truth, this book is full of practical approaches to visual story development that can be applied by anyone. The book combines conceptual thinking and inspirational design, with insightful case studies from the world's leading brands. With slide:ology you'll learn to:

  • Connect with specific audiences
  • Turn ideas into informative graphics
  • Use sketching and diagramming techniques effectively
  • Create graphics that enable audiences to process information easily
  • Develop truly influential presentations
  • Utilize presentation technology to your advantage

Millions of presentations and billions of slides have been produced -- and most of them miss the mark. slide:ology will challenge your traditional approach to creating slides by teaching you how to be a visual thinker. And it will help your career by creating momentum for your cause.
